In September 2010, the Euskampus aggregation and the Bordeaux University hub of excellence signed an agreement to develop and consolidate a common cooperation area in training, research, innovation and international outreach by setting up a cross-border university campus in the Basque Country-Aquitaine Euroregion. The cross-border campus fosters mobility for students and young researchers by fostering co-tuelle and joint qualifications, mobility for academic staff and researchers by establishing joint research programmes in certain areas, and mobility to facilitate internship and job insertion in an internal context. In turn, the cross-border campus enables the international positioning, recognition and visibility of both universities and their periuniversity environments to be improved. Therefore, it is considered to be a cornerstone both in the Euskampus Campus of International Excellence and, in the Bordeaux Excellence Initiative, as well as to develop the Basque Country-Aquitaine Euroregion and to consolidate the European Atlantic Corridor.
The Cross-Border Euroregional Campus set up by the University of the Basque Country / EuskalHerrikoUnibertsitatea (UPV/EHU) and the Pôle de Recherche et d’Enseignement Supérieur Université de Bordeaux (PRES Bordeaux) is a lynchpin in the development of the Euskampus Campus of International Excellence.
Since 1994, thanks to the Aquitaine-Basque Country-Navarra Network, the partners of the Euskampus project (UPV/EHU, Tecnalia and DIPC) have signed numerous research and teaching partnership agreements and a very powerful network of joint projects and teams with the entities of the Bordeaux University Hub. Thus, a close working relationship and of trust has been generated and consolidated project-by-project.
Both the UPV/EHU and the Bordeaux University Hub, in line with European guidelines on excellence and underpinned by their national educational policies, have embarked on their own internationalisation and modernisation projects that are focused respectively on the Euskampus, Campus of International Excellence of the UPV/EHU, and IdEX, Initiative d’Excellence at Bordeaux University projects.
The objectives of both projects are similar and fit in the framework of a relationship that is advancing and being consolidated. Thus, a common project has been agreed on: a Cross-border Campus, with a shared commitment to excellence, as central to the Euroregion and within the Atlantic Corridor.
The Euskampus –IdEX /Bordeaux Cross-border Euroregional Campus is not only a strategy for the share international excellence of both universities, but rather that it is in response to a political and social demand from the Basque Country-Aquitaine demand and the work is being carried out in collaboration with the driving forces of the Euroregion, which consider this Campus to be a cornerstone for the development of the region.
