Last Friday March 14th , during the National Congress of Glaucoma held in Murcia, the Alcon Research Excellence Award in Glaucoma 2014 was given to the group of Experimental Neuro-Ophthalmo-Biology of the UPV/EHU, recognized by the Basque Government. This experimental group is part of the Carlos III RETICS Institute of Eye Diseases Centers network.
Prof. Elena Vecino, head of the group, and collaborators were awarded for their research, accredited with research projects, publications in indexed reviews and doctoral thesis. They aim to solve the problems of glaucoma, investigating the causes that originate it, the potential neuroprotective therapies and healing mechanisms to avoid surgical failures. Glaucoma represents the worldwide leading cause of irreversible blindness, affecting more than 2% of the population; it is an asymptomatic disease usually caused by increased intraocular pressure.
Congratulations to Prof. Elena Vecino, Principal Investigator and Professor of Cell Biology and Histology of the UPV/EHU, to Dr. Haritz Urcola doctor attending at the Alava University Hospital and Associate Professor at the UPV/EHU, to Dr. Marta Galdós and to Dr. Sergio Pinar, senior doctors at the Cruces University Hospital and researchers in BioCruces Health Research Institute.
