The 3rd Euskampus Meeting on collaborative activity in the field of renewable energy in the marine environment was held at the Bizkaia Aretoa on Thursday 17th November. This meeting brought together researchers from the University of the Basque Country UPV/EHU, BCAM and Tecnalia who are working together on training and research to offer local responses to three global challenges:

  1. Integration in the marine renewable energy network.
  2. Cost effectiveness of marine renewable energy
  3. Spatial planning for marine renewable energy

Euskampus has embraced these three major challenges by generating the Pole of Knowledge on Marine Energy. It is an open space for interdisciplinary and inter-institutional collaboration that seeks to optimise the scientific and technological capacity of the Basque Country in order to offer local responses to these challenges.

To date, this Pole of Knowledge has engaged seven UPV/EHU departments, two Tecnalia divisions and the BCAM and aspires to involve further capacities to contribute to the development of this sector in the Basque Country. The stimulation efforts of KETs (Key Enabling Technologies) like advanced materials to seek solutions for the sector can be highlighted. Other KETs, such as photons, ICTs or advanced manufacturing can bring significant benefits to the sector, bestowing some important growth prospects on this Pole of Knowledge, which we hope will be brought to fruition in future meetings.

The participation of the Basque Energy Cluster in the meeting must also be highlighted. Its presence confirmed the collaboration potential between the Euskampus aggregation and the cluster and the companies present in the marine renewable energy sub-sector.
